Artwork & Influences...
My grandfather was an avid art collector. His collection included several works by local Austin sculptors, Charles Umlauf and Ira Correll along with other pieces from many places and times. Having been exposed to so much sculpture from an early age, the inspiration to create sculpture came to me early in life. Added to that inspiration was my many years as a massage therapist. The result is a focus on the human form and attention to the details of human musculature.
My most influential sculpture teacher, the late Jon Formo, once told me about a piece of work in which the shadow on the floor was part of the sculpture. Later I came to use that principal in my wire mesh art. Quite often the shadow has more visible detail than the sculpture. I am always trying to create the ultimate sculpture. I sometimes colorfully paint the wire mesh giving contrast to the shadow on the wall. It's like getting two pieces for the price of one!!!!
With my bronze statues I work closely with the foundry to create unique patinas giving each piece its own individual appearance. The edition numbers are kept low to retain value. The bases are marble, wood, or fossiliferous limestone depending on the desired effect.
